Goldfinch Carduelis carduelis
This exquisitely coloured bird has a strikingly banded black, white and ruby red head with brilliant gold and black wings and is often found populating waste ground where there is an abundance of thistle seed. Its song is sprightly and high-pitched, often ending in a canary-like trill. Unless your garden is overrun by thistles, you will need to offer Niger Seed from a special Niger feeder to attract this beautiful bird. Small (12cm).
