House Sparrow Passer domesticus

Once the most populous urban bird, the House Sparrow has experienced sharply declining numbers in recent years, particularly in the south-east. Distinguished from the tree sparrow by the lack of a black spot on its cheek, the male house sparrow has a dark grey crown and a ragged black throat, the female and juvenile are both a dingy brown. Prefers to feed on a bird table or at a feeder, but it is not unknown for also feeding on the ground. Small (14cm).
